Dennis Quaid's Newborn Twins in Medical Nightmare

TMZ has learned that Dennis Quaid's newborn twins are fighting for their lives after being inadvertently overdosed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Sources tell us the twins -- Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace -- were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anti-coagulant. Babies typically get 10 units. Our sources say they were each mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. We're told one dose was given on Sunday morning, another on Sunday evening.

We're told late Sunday night, both babies started to "bleed out." Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we're told they are stable.

The twins were born to Quaid and wife Kimberly Buffington November 8 via surrogate.

A rep for Quaid did not immediately return our call for comment and there was no immediate comment from Cedars.

We're told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking -- it was the wrong dosage.

A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.

UPDATE: We're told as many as thirteen patients at Cedars were mistakenly given the overdose of Heparin, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins.

92. I don't know what you people are smoking, but Post #9 does not mention anything about race. I do hope all the best for Dennis and his family. This is an awful, awful thing for anyone to go through. Hope everything turns out OK.

93. I wonder who gets the blame for this? The technician placing it incorrectly on the shelf or the nurse for not reading the label. I would hope both.

97. # 69, are you so perfect yourself? I'm a graduating nursing student, and for you to say that graduating nursing students have no common sense is wrong. I know that I saw more then one medication mistake, and the RN's on duty just blew it off and wouldn't report it. THEY are the ones responsible. One of the students gave a vitamin early, and the RN said no big deal, we don't report that stuff..uhhh yes you do. That way it prevents mistakes in the future. I saw someone get immunizations, then one of the other nurses asked why the little girl was given them again, when she was done according to the records..The nurse said..opps..well we will just delete this from the file so it looks ok. Oh and who did this? New nurses?? NO nurses who graduated 15+ YEARS ago. Mistakes happen, but don't assume its only the new nurses that make them. This artical said nothing about the nurse who did this being new..
I hope and pray these babies are okay.

99. God Bless them and the parents. This is why you should ALWAYS ask the nurse or doctor what is being giving, how much is being giving and why is being giving. This occurs more times then you can imagine. Just by asking and don't be afraid you are going to get them mad at you, because they are human just like us and they also make mistakes. A friend of mine that is a RN told me this, because even when she or a family member is giving medicine she does the same thing.

100. How sad this is for them. And the other thing, is remember that it wasn't the hospital, it was the Dr that ordered the medication and the nurse that gave it. There are things that are done to make sure that this doesn't happen, like checking the medication given (before it's given) with at least two other nurses. Guess this wasn't done. Either because someone was in a rush, someone didn't do their job, orders were written wrong, or couldn't be read, or a shortage of nurses.........but still it's no excuse for this kind of goof!
The babies and their parents are in my prayers.

102. Its very sad that one mistake by a nurse or hospital staff could cause these 2 precious babies too loose thier lives. I am shocked that this could happen, not just once, but apparently they were given multiple doses in the wrong amount. When i was pregnant with my twins I was very sick and required an IV on a daily basis to help me, I had 2 to 3 nurses administer the IV's and they all checked it to make sure it was the right medicine and would then show me the label so I knew what I was getting.. and it was just saline solution, you would think that nurses dealing with patients, especially helpless infants would double and triple check.. My heart goes out to the families of all involved, the people responsible will have a lot to carry with them the rest of thier lives.

103. How awful in some hospitals and states Heparin use in children/newborns has been stopped .That stupid idiot that calls self a nurse should have check the labels and remember the 5 rights when administering medications 1.Right patient,2.right med,3.right concentration4.right time 5.right route ....Blessing to the babies
